Job Description

These positions are located in the Denver Metro area - you must have reliable transportation and a valid Drivers License.


Therapeutic extension of HSS Security Services. This position monitors patients that are deemed by hospital staff to be a danger to themselves or others, may be a fall risk, or are confused. BEST ensures the safety for those patients as well as for those in proximity.

Responsibilities:


  • Monitors patient activity and ensures safety.

  • Maintains a direct line of sight with patient at all times, never leaving patient alone under any circumstances.

  • Utilizing 'hands-on" to prevent patient from pulling out medical lines or other equipment or from falling.

  • Immediately reports dangerous patient behavior to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Monitors environment and ensures it is safe for patient and reports potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Uses calming techniques to assist the patient or client in situations that might escalate to a problematic status. 

  • Verbally intervenes during crisis. This includes the functional ability to quickly grasp various situations, develop rapport with emotionally disturbed people, and understand when people are or are not processing information, and be supportive or directive as needed.

  • Ability to physically intervene during crises. This includes the functional ability to physically restrain people, requiring retention of trained knowledge under stress as well as the ability to meet significant physical demands including those of a struggle with someone physically larger and heavier, while making all possible efforts not to inflict injury. It includes the ability to continue to request or direct compliance from people while they are being restrained.

  • Writes accurate, clear, and legible reports.

  • Assists medical staff with areas of patient care such as helping patient get to and from restroom when trained to do so, with an emphasis on monitoring the mental well being of the patient.

  • Assists in keeping patient's area neat and tidy.

  • Places meal orders and answers patient's telephone if patient is unable to do so.

  • Advocates for patient as appropriate.

  • Interacts with patient on a one-to-one basis as their contact person.

  • Works and interacts with patients (and their family/friends), medical personnel, visitors, other employees, and clients.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Shift Details:


  • Behavioral Security Technicians work three 12-hour shifts per week with a total of 36 hours.

  • Work locations vary from day to day based on request from our hospital partners; employees will be dispatched to their location the day of their shift. 

  • Shift runs from 7am to 7pm (days) and while employees are able to select the three days they are scheduled, they must be able to work either Saturday or Sunday to accommodate higher demand for coverage.

  • As this position requires the employee to travel to multiple sites, reliable transportation is required.




Qualifications:


  • Preferred Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Sociology or related field or extensive appropriate experience with the mentally ill population. Will consider candidates who are currently enrolled in Psychology, Counseling, Sociology programs.

  • Current, valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/BLS) Certification

  • Ability to complete all training and pass all competency tasks in the allotted time period to include, but not limited to, TEAM training, HSS and client new employee orientation and security procedures and policies

  • Minimum of one year experience working directly with the mentally ill and/or substance addicted population

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to establish patient rapport

  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply appropriate written guidelines, precedents, and standardized work practices to a variety of problematic situations.

  • Ability to use sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.

  • Ability to 'stand-by' for an entire shift a week, and be ready to arrive at the scheduled facility within an hour




Physcial Demands & Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, individual may be required to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time in a hospital or psychiatric care environment. Will use normal range of vision, hearing, and speaking. May be required to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 lbs. or more. Individual may be exposed to changes in temperatures, humidity, chemicals, bodily fluids, and other conditions commonly found in medical environments. Individual may also occasionally be required to physically restrain a mentally ill patient and de-escalate a potentially dangerous situation.
